  1. Reverse Changes to the New Tailgating Policy

Tailgating provides the only venue in which drinking, school spirit, sports, the Middlebury town community, and alumni can come together on campus. Middlebury tailgates are steeply rooted in tradition, and are fondly remembered and anticipated by the entire extended Middlebury community. Eliminating the consumption of alcohol as well as the enjoyment of music serves as yet another detrimental hit to the Middlebury College social culture which we, the Middlebury student body, would like to reverse for the following reasons:

    1. Because tailgating happens in the daylight in a wide, open space with access to food and refreshments, it provides a…

      Dear Fellow Students,

Like many of you, I am deeply concerned about the manner in which the recent changes to the tailgating policy were both decided and conveyed to the student body. As a crucial element of this community, the student body should, at the very least, be consulted about changes to college policy. The lack of transparency and student involvement in this process has been both disappointing and troubling.

We in the SGA are currently reaching out to administrators to learn more about how, when, and why the college changed this policy. As we do so, however, it is important that you continue to convey your ideas to us. We have taken notice of the unprecedented level of participation in this petition and are doing what we can to learn more about the policy change. In addition to supporting this petition, though, we also want to give you an…

    • Oppose the planned dining "swipe system"

      http://middleburycampus.com/article/swipe-system-to-be-implemented/
The college intends to implement a comprehensive dining system in which we will be forced to swipe our ID cards to eat meals. Not only does this idea send the college well down the route towards adopting restrictive "meal plans," but it limits the very freedom and laid-back Vermont spirit that has attracted students to Middlebury College over 200 years.

        Dear We the Middkids Users,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention! We agree that the current dining hall system is important to the atmosphere of the College.

The SGA is currently considering its status on the issue and is planning to write a bill this semester that fully addresses the update once more information is released. In the meantime, it is our responsibility to ensure that the students have the opportunity to voice their concerns. We will be working this semester to find out more information about the proposed change and how you/we can get involved.

As the SGA, we are here to listen to your input and opinions. Please comment on this petition or write us at sga@middlebury.edu if you have particular concerns. We will include them in our senate meeting when the bill is debated and discussed.

We look forward to hearing from you and…

      • Change the Culture and Civilizations Requirement

        Dear Middlebury community,

We are writing to you today because we strongly believe that Middlebury’s current system of academic requirements, more specifically the Culture and Civilizations requirement, is outdated. We believe that an institution like Middlebuy can adopt a better system, and we ask that you help us achieve that.

Our college claims to believe “that students should have a broad educational exposure to the variety of the world's cultures and civilizations1;” however, its current Culture and Civilizations requirements do not reflect this belief. Students are required to take four different courses in each of the following categories:

        a. AAL:…

          Dear We the Middkids Users,

Thank you for voting and commenting on We the Middkids! Changing the AAL requirement has been discussed at the SGA senate and cabinet meetings last fall. President Liddell has also discussed the idea with relevant administrators at the College and the topic has consistently received support from the senate. While the conversations will continue, changing the AAL requirement is a significant curricular change that necessitates time and further discussion.

We will update you if there are any important changes.

          Thank you,
          Jake Nonweiler
          Chief of Staff

        • Make Skiing More Accessible to Low-Income Students

Skiing at the college's Snow Bowl is a popular Middlebury tradition and the college proudly extolls this. Unfortunately it seems the Snow Bowl experience is as white as the slopes. For students that qualify financially, subsidize the cost of lift tickets and renting equipment at the Snow Bowl.

            Dear We the Middkids users,

Thank you for the idea and the petition! We agree that this is worth investigating.

The Senate discussed this petition and is working on some solutions. Because skiing is already heavily subsidized, there are few options other than providing more funding, which is difficult for the SGA when we have student groups to also fund. We are open to ideas and would love to hear your input.

It is also worth mentioning that SKIGA, the nordic skiing club, offers a free pass to Rikert if you join. E-mail segan@middlebury.edu or pquackenbush@middlebury.edu for more information.

Thanks again and we look forward to working with you all to find some solutions!

          • Have professors provide Syllabuses at least a week before start of term

The first week of classes is always insane as students compare 8 different syllabuses to pick the perfect schedule. If professors provided those schedules earlier, students would be able to save money on books by purchasing them earlier and would have a better idea of what each class offers before classes begin.

              Dear We the Middkids Users,

Thank you for voting and commenting on We the Middkids! The petition “Have professors provide Syllabuses at least a week before start of term” has reached the 100 vote threshold, designating it to an “under review” status. It will be shared with the SGA Senate and President Liddell.

Under review status does NOT yet designate this petition as CLOSED – if you feel strongly about this issue, please encourage your friends to continue adding votes to it! If the SGA decides to pursue legislation or action on the issue, the more support the better!

              Thank you again.

              Sincerely,
              Danny Zhang
