  1. Better Student ID

Our college ID card looks like it was made by a 6-year old with a potato stamp. There were several instances when people refused to believe it was a student ID - museums, cinemas, transport, etc... And you cannot use it to buy alcohol in town (unlike Yale ID in New Haven for example). It just says STUDENT. I am sure there are enough talented students who could design a legit looking ID card that could be used internationally.

      Dear We the MiddKids supporters,

New ID designs are done and will be printed for the incoming Feb class! Working with Bill Burger in the Communications Office, a few students and I gave input into the new designs, which now includes an expiration date. There has also been significant effort to prevent fading and improve the general quality of the cards. We’re not yet sure if new cards will be printed for all current students, but it is something that Mr. Burger is trying to make happen!

Thanks so much for your suggestions, votes, and support.

    • Château Moat

The Château is castle; however, it has no moat. If we would like to call the Château 'the Château', it must ultimately have a moat. This would not only provide aesthetic appeal, but also recreational possibilities, creation of new jobs in a weak economy, protection from enemies, and a possibility for species remediation such as endangered alligators. We believe that a moat would greatly improve staff-student relationships by acting as an exciting conversation starter and a project that involves everyone community-wide. The introduction of a drawbridge would additionally create architectural variety on campus that would mirror the incredible diversity of…

      • Don't allow Public Safety into student dorm rooms without explicit invitation

At other colleges, such as Bryn Mawr, campus police are not allowed to enter into campus dorms except when explicitly invited. This allows Public Safety to carry out all of their tasks related to student safety (so they can still enter into dorms when someone needs help e.g.) but not invade student privacy in an attempt to police the student body (e.g. entering student rooms without permission and rifling through possessions). This would also lead to better relations between the student body and Public Safety, enabling them to actually keep the campus safe more effectively.

        • A café on the roof of Bihall.

We all know that science majors and college kids in general are deficient in Vitamin D, you know what gives it to us? The sun! Well, my idea is one for a more permanent installation of a café in Bihall. I propose a greenhouse format with only glass leading to the outside world (so we can heat it in the winter) and a bunch of tables up there for studying. Imagine sitting there on top of Bihall sipping coffee with the green mountains to your left and the adirondaks to your right while doing your chem homework. It'd make all…

          • Incorporate Weekly Aqua Zumba into the Zumba Schedule

Zumba on Sundays is very popular, but it would be even more fun to incorporate AquaZumba into the regular schedule, perhaps a couple times a semester. The pool is big enough to hold a moderate crowd and it would be fun to have the variety!

              Dear We the Middkids Users,

AquaZumba?! Wow. We have been missing out.

Unfortunately, we are not connected to the Zumba community, nor do we know any one who is! President Liddell suggests getting in contact with the Sunday teacher to investigate the chances of getting AquaZumba. Please e-mail us at (sga@middlebury.edu) and we’d be happy to get in contact with someone.

Perhaps Erin Quinn, Director of Athletics (quinn@middlebury.edu) could help as well.

The SGA would be happy to look into supporting AquaZumba, should it become possible for the teacher and for the facility.

Rachel promises to wear her swimsuit until the day that AquaZumba is available.

              Let’s do this,

            • Bring Back Proctor Stir Fry

In the past, Proctor has had a stir fry station during the dinner hours, most days out of the week. For whatever reason, this station is no longer available this year. Please help fight to bring the stir fry station back. It was a delicious and healthy alternative to the main food line.

              Thank you for your support.

                Dear We the Middkids Users,

Yahoo! We just heard from Bo Cleveland, the executive chef at the College, and he let us know that Proctor plans to bring back the stir fry stations this week. The problem was indeed a staffing issue and Proctor staff was waiting to hear about when and how many hours students would be working. Now that it’s settled, they plan to bring back the stations when they can.

                Cheers to more stir fry!

              • More money for the dining halls

Sick of pineapple orange ice cream and "admiration maple syrup" in Ross? (seriously, what is that? We are in Vermont. Let's support local industry and get real maple syrup every day in Ross). Vote to re-allocate funds from those commons events you never attend, but that fill up your inbox (i.e. Fireplace Lounge, Coffee Klatch, etc.) and give them to dining services instead. Honestly, wouldn't you rather have higher quality food on a daily basis instead of feeling mildly guilty for not attending those events that are always at conspicuously inopportune times? I vote less commons funding and more dining…

                • Equipment Rentals for Squash

We have a really fancy new squash facility that the college spent millions of dollars on. Only students who have squash rackets can really use this facility. I propose that Middlebury adopt some sort of equipment rental program so students without squash rackets can have access to the courts. All the college would have to do is buy a few $30 rackets and loan them out in exchange for a student's ID.

                    • Lil B Guest Lecturer

Lil B has given lectures at universities around the US. Midd should be next! It would be good to hear a different voice for a change. Often times rappers are heard only by their lyrics. Through his lecture, we could understand him as a person, rather than as a celebrity.

                        • Add more exercise machines on campus

As we all know, there is only one gym on campus and it is pretty far for many, if not most, of us (especially those of us who live in Ross, Coffrin, Allen, and the Atwater Suites). In the fall and in the spring, it's already a 15 minute walk each way to the gym, which adds up to 30 minutes of wasted time. Moreover, in the winter, it's 30 minutes walking in subzero temperature. Most are not willing to put in that sacrifice to keep in shape; we opt, instead, to stay indoors and skip the exercise. I propose…

                          • Expand our breakfast options

While I generally love the dining hall food I find myself wishing for one thing... healthier and more creative options for breakfast, especially on weekdays.

It's nice to be able to use the salad bar to add veggies to eggs on weekends in Proctor. Why couldn't the salad bar be open for weekday breakfast? Vegetables are a much needed and healthful addition to everyday breakfasts, otherwise we are stuck with just apples and oranges. We have lots of options for carbs (cereal, seasoned cubes, bagels and breads and english muffins, french toast, etc) and fats (butter, cheese, cream cheese) but…

                            • Free Midd-sponsored bus rides to Burlington

Although the ACTR is a good option to use to get to town, it only comes in the early morning and night which makes it inconvenient for people who want to travel in the afternoon. Middlebury should have a shuttle that runs to Burlington, or at least on the weekends, at least twice a day.

                                Dear We the Middkids Users,

Thank you for your petition and thoughtful comments on the issue.

We researched the possibility of subsidizing the “Burlington Link” between the College and Burlington, but found that such a proposal would be cost prohibitive given our limited budget and need to fund student groups on campus.

As it stands, the ACTR is already heavily subsidized and allows for a round-trip between the College and Burlington for $8. While the buses only run during commuter times during the week, there are multiple options on Saturday to travel to Burlington, including 9:45am, 12:15pm, 4:45pm, and 7:15pm.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with further thoughts, if any arise. We appreciate your support and input.

                              • Democratize the dining menus

Many students use go/menus or go/noms (http://menus.middlebury.edu/) as a convenient source of information that allows them to plan out their meals on a day-to-day basis. This service could be significantly improved by allowing students to provide feedback or suggestions with respect to individual items being served each dining hall. The addition of a simple "upvote/downvote" system on the menus page would provide students with a means to anonymously share their opinions, whether they be positive or negative, of individual dining hall offerings. This feature would supplement the comment cards which are already in place in the dining halls,…

                                  Dear We the Middkids Users,

Great news! Matthew Biette, head of dining services, is meeting with me and Pres. Liddell tomorrow to discuss ideas and next steps. He seems open to the possibility and we’re hoping to get his thoughts on how to best go about democratizing the menu.

If you have any thoughts you’d like to share beyond this petition, please e-mail me at jnonweiler@middlebury.edu and I’ll be sure it gets included in tomorrow’s meeting.

We’ll update you after tomorrow’s meeting!

                                • Separate block draws by number of spaces

Currently the Middlebury housing process is not the most efficient process. One complaint I continually hear from students is how upset they are that blocks of 4/5 are grouped together during housing. If a group of students applies for a 5-person block and then doesn't get it, they need to have a 4 person backup during the same application period. This is unfair, because it leaves one person without any options. They are not allowed to join another group because they can't be on two applications at the same time. If the two were separated, those people that didn't get…

                                  • Replace Orange-Pineapple Flavor Ice Cream

Replace this universally unloved flavor with the flavors that always run out because they're so popular (e.g. cookie dough, chocolate brownie, cookies and cream, etc.).

                                      Dear We the Middkids Users,

Thank you for your initiative! Geez, we agree that the “orange-pineapple” flavor is less than ideal. Rachel’s a cookies ’n cream type of president.

We appreciate your thoughts and would encourage you to contact dining services through one of the suggestions/comments form. They are always listening. Please do cite the petition and let them know that the SGA is fully behind the initiative to at least get chocolate brownie more often. Your thoughts will be most valuable shared directly with dining services.

Please don’t hesitate to let us know if there’s anything we can do or if want to share a Sunday Sundae with Madam President.

                                      • Replace the 4 types of yogurt in the dining hall with one plain greek yogurt

the current local cabot yogurt, although delicious, is absolutely not nutritious (19.0 grams of sugar in one serving of strawberry yogurt as opposed to 10.5 grams in one serving of plain greek yogurt). Less sugar, more protein.

                                        • More Chocolate Chip Pancakes (Especially in Proctor)

Although the dining halls serve chocolate chip pancakes every once in a while, I think many people would love it if they were served more often. Judging from midnight breakfast in Ross, they're more popular than regular pancakes, and to the best of my knowledge they are no more difficult to make. Show your support!
